The series began at the 23 y 12 Cinema with a screening of “The Battle of Jigue,” directed by Rogelio Paris, a film that recreates one of the last battles fought by the Rebel Army against Fulgencio Batista’s forces in the Sierra Maestra mountains.

Considered both documentary and fiction, the film exemplifies Paris’s style, a director who contributed many valuable films to Cuban cinema and earned international acclaim for his historical and aesthetic vision.

The series also includes the documentary Blue Ferret, by Bernabe Hernandez, which explores the life of the avant-garde painter Carlos Enriquez, and Rancheador, by Sergio Giral, which focuses on the representation of slavery and racism in colonial Cuba.

On Sunday, the series will conclude with a screening of “The Last Supper,” directed by Tomas Gutierrez Alea, one of the island’s most influential filmmakers and a founding member of the Cuban Institute of Cinematographic Art and Industry (ICAIC).

The film tells the story of a Havana count inviting twelve slaves to dinner on Holy Thursday, in a symbolic play that blends satire and social critique, reaffirming Alea’s interest in historical and humanistic analysis.

With this series, the Cuban Film Archive reaffirms its role in preserving and disseminating audiovisual heritage, offering audiences a journey through five decades of Cuban cinema.
