On Friday, Portuguese Prime Minister Luis Montenegro declared that next Sunday will be a National Day of Mourning in memory of the victims of the earthquakes in Venezuela and, in particular, in memory of the victims of Portuguese nationality and Portuguese descent. The natural disaster took the lives of 84 Portuguese nationals, 15 of whom were minors.

In addition to reiterating the solidarity of the Portuguese nation with Venezuela, Montenegro said he remains in regular contact with the Portuguese teams on the ground and with the Bolivarian authorities.
He expressed his hope that Venezuela’s recovery will be swift so that “a new chapter may begin” in a country toward which Portugal has particular regard because it “means a great deal, for various reasons.”
Among those reasons is the large Portuguese community living and working in Venezuela, where about 182,000 Portuguese citizens are registered with the consular network.

The latest figures provided by the Portuguese government indicate that the two earthquakes in Venezuela left 84 Portuguese fatalities, of whom 72 also held Venezuelan nationality, while another 63 people remain missing.
At the press conference on Thusday night, Venezuelan Acting President confirmed that the June earthquakes left at least 2,595 people dead and 12,400 injured.
She also mentioned that rescue operations are continuing with the support of specialists from 33 countries. So far, 6,462 people have been rescued from the rubble of buildings that collapsed in the earthquakes.
