President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo stated yesterday that Mexico is a safe destination for visitors and rejected the notion that there is any impediment to traveling to the country, after the United Kingdom government updated its travel alert ahead of Sunday’s match between the Tricolor and England, in the round of 16 of the FIFA World Cup 2026.
At her press conference in the National Palace, the president maintained that Mexico City authorities are already adopting measures to reinforce security and improve the organization of the spaces where hundreds of thousands of fans will follow the match.
“It is safe to visit the country; it has no problem at all,” she responded regarding the recommendation issued by the British Foreign Office. She explained that after the death of four people last Tuesday during the celebrations on Reforma, the Mexico City government decided to expand the number of screens to distribute attendees and avoid massive crowds.
Sheinbaum called on fans to maintain sensible conduct. “We must trust people, avoid excess alcohol, and act responsibly,” she expressed, and insisted that “it is safe to travel to Mexico; it has no problem at all.”
Regarding Sunday’s operation, she indicated that she maintains permanent communication with the head of government, Clara Brugada, and that the objective is to avoid the concentration of people at a single point. She acknowledged that controlling a turnout close to one million attendees represents a challenge, so the strategy centers on guiding fans.
The British government updated its travel guidance for Mexico on Wednesday. It warned about the increase in mobile phone theft, the possible adulteration of drinks, and recalled the death of people during Tuesday’s celebrations in the vicinity of the Ángel de la Independencia.
