
Around one million people gathered near the Angel of Independence monument to celebrate Mexico’s victory.
On Wednesday, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum expressed her condolences to the families of the three people who died during celebrations at the Angel of Independence monument following Mexico’s victory over Ecuador in the 2026 World Cup.

She lamented the incident and indicated that Clara Brugada, head of the Mexico City government, would hold a press conference to provide details on the situation and confirmed that the local administration is in communication with the affected families.
Sheinbaum added that she instructed Rosa Rodriguez, Secretary of the Interior, to provide immediate support to the families, strengthening coordination between the federal government and local authorities.
The Health Sector Command Post reported that the three people died of asphyxiation during the celebrations. Among the victims are two women, ages 19 and 48, and a 44-year-old man.

Two of the victims were found unconscious at the intersection of Hamburg and Lancaster streets, while the third was located on Berna Street, all in the Juarez neighborhood.
All three received resuscitation efforts and were transported for medical attention, but were ultimately pronounced dead. Mexico City authorities confirmed that support will be provided to their families.
The Mexico City government estimated that around one million people gathered near the Angel of Independence monument to celebrate Mexico’s 2-0 victory over Ecuador, which qualified them for the round of 16.
