In Managua, young people led a festive caravan commemorating the 47th anniversary of the victory of the revolution led by the Sandinista National Liberation Front (FSLN), which culminated in the overthrow of the U.S.-backed dictatorship of Anastasio Somoza Debayle.

Carrying red-and-black flags, participants in the caravan departed from Los Marañones Park and traveled through several areas of the capital. People also held recreational activities at Bismarck Martinez Park, the Carlos Fonseca Community Center, the 10 de Junio neighborhood, Farabundo Marti Park, the 14 de Septiembre neighborhood and the Cacique Nicarao Monument.

On July 19, 1979, Nicaraguans brought an end to more than four decades of rule by the Somoza family, established after the assassination of anti-imperialist leader Augusto Cesar Sandino in 1934. Women guerrilla fighters who took part in the 1979 insurrection also participated in the events, underscoring the importance of preserving the achievements attained with the victory of the Sandinista Revolution.

“We are on the front lines, celebrating the Revolution. We defend peace, health care and education,” said Socorro Garcia, a member of the Carlos Roberto Huembes Neighborhood Life Unit.
