France showcased its formidable prowess by decisively defeating Sweden 3-0 in the Round of 32 of the FIFA World Cup 2026 at MetLife Stadium, propelling the team into the Round of 16.

The match in New Jersey began with Sweden displaying a spirited effort, actively contesting fifty-fifty balls, which led to a balanced control of possession for the initial 15 minutes. However, the tide soon turned as France began to assert its superior offensive capabilities.

France demonstrated its formidable offensive power, consistently creating dangerous situations throughout the match.

The initial moments of the match saw France immediately establishing its attacking intent. The first significant opportunity arose in the 15th minute of the first half when left-back Lucas Digne unleashed a low, cross-body shot from outside the area, which Swedish goalkeeper Jacob Zetterström confidently contained.

Just four minutes later, winger Bradley Barcola made his presence felt, penetrating the penalty area from the left side and aiming for the near post, though his shot sailed slightly high. These early incursions set the tone for France’s relentless offensive strategy, as they systematically dismantled the Swedish defense with intricate plays and powerful strikes, signaling their clear dominance.

The pressure mounted for Sweden as France continued to orchestrate dangerous attacks. In the 31st minute of the first half, a brilliant surge down the right wing by defender Jules Koundé culminated in a cut-back pass for Mbappé, whose powerful shot struck the right post, ricocheted off a defender, and was ultimately stopped on the goal line by Zetterström. Just four minutes later, a strike from the left by forward Michael Olise also hit the Swedish goalkeeper’s right post. The rebound fell to winger Ousmane Dembélé on the opposite flank, whose curling shot narrowly missed the same post. These near misses highlighted France’s consistent threat and Sweden’s increasing struggle to contain the relentless offensive onslaught.

The reigning World Cup runner-up finally broke the deadlock in stoppage time of the first half. Mbappé received a short corner on the left, skillfully drove into the penalty area, executed a sharp cutback onto his right foot, and unleashed a powerful shot into the far corner, giving France a deserved 1-0 lead.

Sweden had minimal offensive presence in the first half, with their only dangerous moment coming in the first minute of stoppage time. A cross from the right by winger Anthony Elanga found midfielder Elliot Stroud, whose shot went wide, underscoring the lack of clear-cut opportunities for the Scandinavian side against a resolute French defense.

France’s

France extended its advantage early in the second half. In the 7th minute of the second half, forward Michael Olise drove forward with the ball before delivering a masterful assist to Barcola, who unleashed a powerful shot into the top corner, making the score 2-0 (53th minute).

Olise’s influence continued to grow. In the 15th minute, he received the ball on the right edge of the area and attempted a curling shot towards the far post, which Jacob Zetterström managed to tip away for a corner. Four minutes later, Mbappé orchestrated an attack down the left flank, delivering a precise through-pass for Olise to finish, though his shot deflected off a defender and narrowly missed the near post.

In the 25th minute, another surging run by Mbappé down the left culminated in a cut-back pass for Michael Olise, who, despite his efforts, could not beat Zetterström with a gentle shot towards the far post, which the goalkeeper saved after quickly closing down the angle.

The relentless pressure from France eventually paid off for a third time. Just three minutes later, the Real Madrid player and French Captain Mbappé received a perfectly weighted pass, outpaced his marker, and confidently slotted the ball into the far post, marking his second goal of the afternoon in New Jersey and solidifying the 3-0 victory.

Sweden’s attempts to create scoring chances remained largely thwarted. Their only notable opportunity in the second half came in the 43rd minute, with a combination play at the top of the box culminating in a shot from forward Viktor Gyökeres, which French goalkeeper Mike Maignan competently cleared, diving low to his left post.

European Record

Mbappé’s two goals in this match brought his total World Cup goal count to 18 becoming the top European goalscorer in FIFA history, but placing him just one goal shy of Lionel Messi’s record of 19, who secured the title of the all-time leading scorer in World Cup history during the current edition of the tournament.

Furthermore, Mbappé equaled Messi in the World Cup 2026 top scorers ranking with 6 goals, and he is currently favored to win the award, also boasting 2 assists.

Potter Praises French Brilliance

Sweden coach Graham Potter said after the elimination that he had no complaints against his team after losing to a brilliant France in the World Cup.

“The best team won. Congratulations to France. I think to win this game we had to be perfect and, to be honest, I’m not sure that would have been enough”, Potter declared.

I have no reproach with my footballers. I told them after the game that I do not consider it a dishonor to lose to France. They are a superior team and have players of the highest level”, he added.

Their 32-round qualification was a success in itself, after the Scandinavians entered the World Cup via the catch-up route thanks to their performance in the UEFA Nations League. Potter, appointed last October as the head coach of Sweden, has a contract until 2030. His next challenge will be to lead the team in the Nations League, a competition that will start at the end of September, with matches against Romania and Poland.
