Over the past week, the Venezuelan government’s Nevado Mission and other animal protection organizations have carried out comprehensive assistance operations for pets and wildlife affected by the twin earthquakes that struck on June 24.

Multidisciplinary teams are providing free veterinary medical care, shelter, and food. The animals are being treated by veterinarians and specialists for conditions associated with injuries from debris, infections, stress, and behavioral disorientation.
In Caracas, veterinary centers in San Bernardino and Nuevo Circo continue to provide free ultrasound, X-ray, general consultation, deworming, and vaccination services.
Organizations such as Voluntarios por los Animales, La Manada de Bethoven, Patitas a Salvo Venezuela, Protege Colitas, Huellascan, and the International Brigade of Brazil have activated community networks and digital platforms to help locate missing animals.
Currently, the collaborative tool “Patas a Casa” serves as a free directory for registering reports with photographs and geographic coordinates, facilitating the reunification of families.
Organizations involved in animal care have also provided assistance to wildlife, including a titi monkey and a parrot rescued after the earthquakes. They have also organized temporary shelter for animals whose caretakers died or remain missing.
To maintain supplies in temporary camps for displaced families, the Nevado Mission operates as a collection center and distributes pet food and protein rations through direct surveys conducted in public squares and shelters.
The Nevado Mission is a program created to rescue, protect, and provide veterinary care for companion animals and stray animals. Its objective is to promote respect for animal life and the ethical management of urban wildlife. Established in 2014, the program is named after “Nevado,” the famous Mucuchies dog that accompanied Liberator Simon Bolivar during the Admirable Campaign and the Battle of Carabobo.

Animals Become Symbols of Hope
Over the past week, thousands of social media users have shared images of animal rescues, amplifying expressions of solidarity with many Venezuelan families.
“Amid the devastation caused by the June 24 earthquakes, national and international rescue teams managed to save dogs, cats and birds trapped beneath collapsed structures, turning them into symbols of hope for the affected communities,” Prensa Animal reported.
“Among the most widely shared cases are that of a mixed-breed dog freed after hours of work, a white cat with brown spots returned to a girl whose home collapsed, and a canary that survived inside its cage thanks to the intervention of the Topos Aztecas,” it added.
The Mexican animal welfare outlet estimates that at least 12 dogs, three cats and one bird have been recovered alive over the past six days.
“These stories, widely shared on social media, became symbols of resilience and served as a reminder that amid tragedy, every life matters,” Prensa Animal stressed.
Among the latest pets rescued alive are two poodles that were freed from the rubble of a building, Prensa Opinion reported on Instagram on Tuesday.
