Qatar denies that there will be a high-level, direct meeting between the U.S. and Iran.

On Tuesday, Qatari Foreign Ministry spokesperson Majed Al Ansari confirmed the arrival in Doha of White House special envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner.

“Witkoff and Kushner are in Doha to speak with the mediators,” Al Ansari said, adding that the talks will address issues such as the Iranian matter and the fragile ceasefire in Lebanon. However, the Qatari diplomat denied that there will be a high-level, direct meeting between the United States and Iran.

Al Ansari said that the technical meetings between Washington and Tehran to discuss issues related to the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) “have not stopped, and the mediators are working to facilitate them.”

On Monday, President Donald Trump said that representatives of the United States and Iran would meet in Doha to discuss the Islamic Republic’s nuclear program.

Hours later, however, Iran again ruled out holding talks with Washington in Doha and said its delegation would travel to Qatar with the “sole objective” of addressing the release of blocked Iranian assets.

“The US$6 billion in frozen Iranian funds has not yet been transferred to Tehran,” the Qatari diplomat said, specifying that the transfer “will only take place if the U.S. and Iran reach an agreement.”

“The issue of the frozen funds is directly linked to the progress of the negotiations between Washington and Tehran,” Al Ansari added.

The resumption of navigation through the Strait of Hormuz is one of the “central points of the negotiations,” the Qatari diplomat said, adding that his country’s priority is ensuring the security of vessel traffic through the strait and the removal of mines.

On June 21, Iran and the United States agreed on a 60-day roadmap to reach a final peace agreement that includes the Iranian nuclear program, as established in the MoU. The prospects for peace, however, were overshadowed by new U.S. attacks on the Iranian coast, which were answered by Iranian forces with attacks on U.S. bases in Kuwait and Bahrain.
