12-year-old rescued in La Guaira as international teams continue searching for survivors after the earthquakes.


A 12-year-old boy was rescued alive on Monday night after spending five days trapped beneath the rubble of a residential building in Macuto, La Guaira state, in one of the most significant survivor recoveries since the earthquakes that struck several regions of Venezuela.

Carlos Miguel Colmenares was found in Macuto parish, Vargas municipality, during a joint operation carried out by the USAR ECU-01 team from the Quito Fire Department and rescue specialists from the Dominican Republic.

Rescuers spent hours working through the collapsed structure before locating the boy and carrying out a careful extraction.

“Just minutes ago, after hours of operations, our USAR ECU-01 team, in coordination with the team from the Dominican Republic, successfully rescued Carlos, 12, alive after he remained trapped beneath the rubble in the Macuto sector, La Guaira, Venezuela,” the Quito Fire Department said on its official X account.

Following the rescue, Carlos was placed on a rigid stretcher and taken by ambulance to receive specialized medical care from Venezuelan authorities.

Rescuers said the operation has strengthened the determination of teams continuing to search for survivors.

“Five days after the earthquake, finding signs of life is the greatest motivation to keep moving forward. Every person rescued represents a family regaining hope and reminds us that continuing the search is worthwhile. As long as there is a possibility, we will keep searching,” rescuers said in a message shared on social media.

According to the latest official report from the Bolivarian Government, the earthquakes have left 1,719 people dead, 5,034 injured and caused extensive material damage across several regions of the country.

National and international rescue teams remain deployed in the hardest-hit areas as efforts continue to locate additional survivors. Governments and organizations from Latin America, Europe and Asia have also sent humanitarian assistance to Venezuela.
