It will channel up to US$116 million in food aid between 2026 and 2030.

On Friday, the UN’s Executive Board of the World Food Programme (WFP) approved an assistance program for Cuba despite the United States’ attempted blockade.

The vote took place in Rome and concluded with 29 votes in favor and only 2 against, reflecting overwhelming support for the continuation of international cooperation with the Cuban people.

The approved program will channel approximately US$116 million in food aid between 2026 and 2030, strengthening nutritional security and crisis response capacity on the island.

The WFP has a long history of cooperation with Cuba, supporting food distribution projects, school nutrition programs, and emergency assistance, which has been key to mitigating the effects of the economic blockade.

The United States attempted to prevent the approval by pressuring members of the Executive Board, in line with its policy of sanctions and energy restrictions against Cuba, which Havana considers a form of “collective punishment.”

Washington found itself isolated in its position, as most countries supported the continuation of humanitarian aid, emphasizing the importance of guaranteeing access to basic foodstuffs.

The Cuban government stressed that the decision reaffirms the legitimacy of the United Nations and international solidarity, in a context where food security is one of the main internal challenges.
