The U.S. Geological Survey said the latest tremor struck at a depth of 10 kilometers (6.2 miles), with its epicenter located 27 kilometers (16.8 miles) north of the town of Caraballeda in La Guaira, the state hardest hit by last Wednesday’s twin earthquakes.

In posts on social media, Venezuelan Parliament President Jorge Rodriguez confirmed that the new earthquake had caused no additional damage anywhere in the country.

So far, however, Venezuelan authorities have recorded 1,450 deaths and 3,150 injuries as a result of last week’s earthquakes.

On Monday, the Caracas Metro temporarily suspended service and said it would carry out an inspection protocol on its infrastructure. Just one day earlier, the Transportation Ministry had announced the restoration of metro service in Caracas, Valencia and Maracaibo.

Un sismo registrado alrededor de las 7:00 de la mañana generó momentos de tensión entre los equipos de rescate que trabajan en la zona del colapso del Edificio Rita, en San Bernardino, ante el temor de que pudiera producirse un nuevo derrumbe.

Acting President Activates Task Force for Housing Construction

On Sunday, Venezuelan Acting President Delcy Rodriguez announced the activation of a “High Command” tasked with organizing the installation of temporary camps to assist families who lost their homes in the twin earthquakes.

Its main objective will be to design and coordinate projects aimed at accelerating the construction of new housing for those displaced by the disaster as quickly as possible.

The High Command will be coordinated by Legislator Rodriguez, while Hector Rodriguez, the minister for Social and Territorial Socialism, will serve as its executive secretary.

The new structure will include the ministries of Habitat and Housing, Industry and Commerce, Food, Justice, and Economy. It will also include the Social Ministry and the Autonomous National Council for the Rights of Children and Adolescents (IDENA) to provide priority assistance to children.

Authorities from the states of Miranda, Aragua, Carabobo, Falcon and La Guaira will be part of the body to strengthen territorial coordination.

The High Command will also include the head of government of the Capital District and the mayors of Caracas, Chacao and Vargas to ensure a coordinated response in the affected areas.
