Power is not a trophy but a responsibility, she reminded Bernardo de la Espriella.

On Sunday, singer Carolina Giraldo, known professionally as Karol G, published a letter addressed to Colombia’s President-elect Abelardo de la Espriella, reminding him that power is not a trophy but a responsibility.

She noted that although 12.9 million Colombians supported De la Espriella and another 12.7 million voted for Ivan Cepeda, they all share the desire to live in a better country. The following is her letter, which she shared on social media one week after the second round of the presidential election.

“Mr. President,

I am not writing to you as a supporter. I am not writing to you as an opponent. I am writing to you as a Colombian who deeply loves her country. The election is over. The campaign is over. The speeches are over. Now begins the hardest part: governing for everyone.

There are millions of Colombians who believe in you, and there are millions who think differently, dream differently and voted differently. But we all share one thing: We want to live in a safer country, a fairer country, with more opportunities and less hatred.

I want to ask you:

To remember every day that the power you received a week ago is not a trophy. It is not a prize. It is a responsibility.

To listen to those who voted for you, but also to those who did not. Not to govern for a party, an ideology or one sector, but to govern for Colombia.

To think about the children who deserve an education, the families struggling to make ends meet, the farmers who sustain this land, the entrepreneurs who create jobs, the young people who dream of a better future and those who have lost hope of finding it here.

To remember that there can be no progress as long as there is no security and fear remains part of Colombians’ daily lives. Our country needs leaders capable of uniting people. It needs courageous decisions, and it needs results.

May those who hold the highest offices remember that history judges them not by the promises they made but by the lives they managed to improve.

I hope that when your term ends, Colombians will be able to look back and say that, despite our differences, you lived up to the responsibility you were given. Because in the end, no president wins when they win an election… A president wins when the people win.”

On Monday, De la Espriella, who describes himself as “The Tiger” and leads the far-right Homeland Defenders movement, responded cautiously to the popular singer, inviting her to join his “pack.”

I kind of have the feeling that if he’s the sort of guy you have to write a letter to tell him to govern for everyone, he’s the sort of guy that rules in favor of just a few. And the letter won’t change that.
