Ukrainian Attacks Prompt Suspension of Archaeological Expeditions in Crimea
On Monday, Russian archaeologist Alexandr Butiaguin confirmed that the Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg had canceled its archaeological expeditions to the Crimean Peninsula because of continued Ukrainian attacks on the territory.
The Myrmekion Archaeological Expedition, which conducts excavations at sites in Kerch and is led by Butiaguin, announced that it was recruiting volunteers to carry out excavations in the historic Kuban region, located between the Black Sea, the Pontic Steppe, the Volga Delta and the North Caucasus, because it is more accessible.
Until now, nine archaeological expeditions had been operating in Crimea. At the end of April, Butiaguin was released by Polish authorities, who had detained him in December 2025 at Ukraine’s request. Ukraine claimed the authority to accuse him of conducting excavations in Crimea without permission.
Butiaguin had carried out archaeological work at the remains of the ancient Greek colony of Myrmekion in Crimea, where he discovered several artifacts, including 30 gold coins dating to the era of Alexander the Great.
