In Malawi, culture, music, dance, and storytelling have long been powerful ways of bringing people together, strengthening social bonds, and passing values from one generation to the next. In our history, peacebuilding has proven to be most effective when it speaks the language of the community. Aligning with this potential, the Malawi chapter of World BEYOND War organized a Community peacebuilding event on June 27, 2026, that combined dialogue with cultural expression to encourage community ownership of peacebuilding efforts. The event brought together young people, community leaders, and local residents to reflect on how collective action can contribute to ending violence and building a more peaceful community.

Instead of relying solely on formal presentations, the event encouraged active participation through discussions, shared experiences, and community dialogue. Participants explored the importance of nonviolence, conflict prevention, and peaceful coexistence while reflecting on the role that every individual can play in creating safer and more inclusive communities. Particular attention was given to the contribution of young people, whose creativity is essential for strengthening a culture of peace in Malawi.

Building on Culture as a tool for peace

During the event, we highlighted the use of traditional dance and drama to communicate messages of peace, unity, and tolerance. These performances transformed the meeting into an interactive community experience, allowing participants to hear about peacebuilding and at the same time to experience it through cultural expression. In fact in many Malawian communities, cultural traditions are among the most effective ways of reaching diverse audiences. By integrating these traditions into peace education, our chapter experienced how locally rooted approaches can make peace messages accessible to many and also engaging. We believe that peace messages become more powerful when they are expressed through our own culture, which allows everyone to participate, regardless of age or educational background. This is how we want to build a movement that really belongs to the community.

Throughout the community gathering, participants exchanged ideas on strengthening peaceful coexistence and supporting one another in preventing conflict before it escalates. Many expressed their willingness to become peace ambassadors within their own neighborhoods, schools, and organizations. One young participant said she realized that peacebuilding is not only the responsibility of those considered as leaders. Everyone has a role to play, and using our traditional dance to spread messages of peace makes those messages easier for all to embrace.

The strong participation of the people invited reflected the growing interest in community-based peace initiatives across Malawi. Our chapter has actually created a welcoming space where dialogue and cultural expression will in the future complement one another.
