The registration was confirmed on Sunday by New Ideas party president and the president’s cousin, Xavi Bukele, who posted on X the message “We are ready” alongside a photograph of the application forms for both Nayib Bukele and Vice President Félix Ulloa, showing a receipt stamp and signature from NI’s National Electoral Commission.

The Legislative Assembly, dominated by NI, approved and ratified on a single day—July 31, 2025—without prior analysis or debate, the reform to constitutional articles 75, 80, 133, 152, and 154, thereby clearing the path for Bukele to run for a third consecutive term.

According to various recently published polls, Bukele faces growing demands from the population on economic issues. At the end of December 2025, Bukele told a Spanish YouTuber in an interview that he would like to continue governing the Central American country for “ten more years,” though he clarified it was only a personal wish.

Bukele began his second consecutive term on June 1, 2024, which was prohibited by the Constitution at the time and was set to conclude in 2029. However, the reform moved the presidential elections forward to 2027, and from that point onward, the presidential term will be extended to six years.
