Argentina secured a comfortable 3-1 victory over Jordan on Saturday, scoring all three goals from set pieces—the final one from the captain himself—to claim a third straight win, top Group J with a perfect record, and advance to the second round with high morale, according to head coach Lionel Scaloni’s post-match comments.

Argentinian association football manager Lionel Scaloni expressed cautious satisfaction with the result, noting he was happy to give minutes to all players, stating they deserved it. He highlighted that nine different players started compared to the previous two matches against Algeria and Austria.

The coach also explained that the team needed this performance, and the players delivered. He confirmed they did not want to risk defenders Nahuel Molina or Gonzalo Montiel due to their difficult position and ongoing recovery needs.

Scaloni had words of praise for the three goalscorers: Giovani Lo Celso, Lautaro Martínez, and Lionel Messi. He celebrated Lo Celso’s return, as the midfielder missed the previous World Cup due to injury; he was happy for Lautaro, who had not scored in the past World Cup; and he expressed joy that Messi continues to find the net.

Messi entered the match in the 60th minute and scored a free-kick in the 80th, making it 1-3. That goal was his sixth in this World Cup and his 19th overall in World Cups. Argentina will face Cape Verde in the second round on Friday, July 3.
