The president of the Venezuelan Parliament, Jorge Rodríguez, reported this Saturday that 1,430 people have died after the two earthquakes of 7.2 and 7.5 recorded last Wednesday, while there are 3,328 injured.
“At this hour (…) we are counting that 1,430 brothers and sisters have died, unfortunately they have lost their lives,” said the legislator in a speech broadcast by the state channel VTV.
Rodríguez explained that there are 3,142 affected families, who are being cared for in shelters, and that a total of 73,736 families have been assisted. He added that more than 5,000 assists have been provided in health centers.
Regarding international aid, he reported that 2,242 rescuers from various nations are deployed on the ground, complementing the work carried out by more than 30,000 Venezuelans from various specialties.
A total of 2,697 people have registered as volunteers at the Poliedro de Caracas, which allows for organized reinforcement of rescue efforts during critical hours for finding live people under the rubble.
He asked the population not to go to La Guaira and to help keep the roads clear to allow aid to arrive and the wounded to be evacuated. In addition, he insisted on the need to get information through official channels and not believe the hoaxes spread by opposition sectors.
Earlier, the government of the acting president, Delcy Rodríguez, reported that during the early hours of this Saturday, 2,600 tons of food and drinking water have been distributed in La Guaira to the affected families.
Venezuela has received more than 1,600 rescuers to assist the victims of the earthquakes, reported this Saturday the Venezuelan Vice Minister for Europe and North America, Oliver Blanco.
