The decision was made at the agency’s headquarters in Rome, following maneuvers by the United States delegation to try to obstruct the adoption of the document that governs the agency’s cooperation with the island. The approved document guarantees $116 million for food security in the Caribbean nation.

Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodríguez Parrilla described the result on social media as a “resounding victory for Cuba in the UN World Food Programme (WFP) against US maneuvers to prevent food aid to the Cuban people from the United Nations. Despite its immense and spurious pressure, the U.S. was isolated on the Executive Board of this UN body,” the Foreign Minister asserted. This outcome will allow for continued cooperation for the next five years in a context marked by the U.S. embargo.

For his part, Alejandro González Behemaras, Director of International Organizations at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, gave a press conference in which he emphasized that the U.S. delegation tried to undermine the agency’s work with the Caribbean nation.

Contundente victoria de #Cuba en @WFP frente a maniobras de #EEUU para impedir ayuda en alimentos al pueblo cubano por parte de Naciones Unidas.

The text reads, “Resounding victory for #Cuba at @WFP against #EEUU maneuvers to block UN food aid to the Cuban people. Despite its massive and spurious pressures, the United States was left isolated in the Executive Board of that UN body, which approved, by 29 votes in favor and only 2 against, the Program that will enable that agency to maintain its cooperation with #Cuba during the 2026-2030 period, for an amount of 116 million USD for food security, in a context marked by the unprecedented strengthening of the US blockade and energy siege. The official stressed that the maneuvers and brutal pressure exerted by the U.S. government on its members demonstrate the international isolation to which Washington subjects Cuba.

González Behemaras clarified that the attempt to obstruct the Country Program has a particular connotation: preventing food aid financed or channeled through the United Nations system from reaching Cuba.

The Cuban representative insisted that this action is part of the unprecedented strengthening of the economic, commercial, and financial blockade against our people. He also linked these demands to the criminal energy blockade and the inclusion of Cuba on the spurious unilateral list of state sponsors of terrorism, responding to attempts to subjugate and suffocate our people.

The diplomat recalled that these actions by the White House are taking place in a particularly difficult context for the Cuban economy and society, due to the long-term effects of all these policies.
