‘Güero Pink’ controls one of the factions of the Sinaloa Cartel linked to El Chapo’s sons.

On Friday, Mexico’s Federal Security Cabinet announced the arrest of Misael Guerrero Perez (aka “Güero Pink”), the leader of the criminal group Los Chapitos, one of the factions of the Sinaloa Cartel linked to the sons of drug trafficker Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman.

His arrest took place in Escuinapa, a city in Sinaloa, the birthplace of the historic drug trafficking cartel designated as a terrorist organization by Washington.

Authorities considered Güero Pink a “priority target” because of his involvement in kidnappings and homicides. He was also a priority target because he served as Los Chapitos’ regional leader in southern Sinaloa.

On Friday, authorities also arrested Hilario “N,” the former director of Public Security and Municipal Transit in Escuinapa, during an operation in which officers seized long guns, magazines, ammunition, tactical equipment, and drugs. For now, it is unknown whether the former official is linked to the arrested regional leader of Los Chapitos.

“Through coordinated actions, we continue weakening the groups responsible for generating violence and advancing the construction of peace in Sinaloa,” the Federal Security Cabinet said, adding that the operations involved personnel from the Defense Ministry, the National Guard and Sinaloa state authorities.

Since 2024, Sinoloa has faced a security crisis because of the internal war between the criminal groups Los Chapitos and La Mayiza, following the arrest in the U.S. of drug trafficker Ismael Zambada (aka El Mayo) under circumstances that have not been fully clarified.

In April, tensions between Mexico and the U.S. increased after Washington accused Sinaloa Gov. Ruben Rocha of receiving bribes from Los Chapitos to allow tons of drugs to be transported to the U.S. border.

Despite the internal conflict, the Sinaloa Cartel remains one of the country’s most powerful criminal organizations alongside the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG).
