The military honors and burial ceremony took place at the Commander Ernesto Che Guevara Sculpture Complex, where the remains of the prominent revolutionary will rest alongside those of the Argentine-Cuban guerrilla fighter and his comrades-in-arms.
Floral offerings were laid before the Mausoleum’s eternal flame on behalf of Army General Raul Castro, Miguel Díaz-Canel, the Association of Combatants of the Revolution, family members, and the people of Cuba.
Also participating in the tribute were the President of the National Assembly of People’s Power (parliament) and the Council of State, Esteban Lazo; Foreign Minister Bruno Rodriguez; and Gladys Martinez, First Secretary of the Communist Party of Cuba in the western province of Artemisa, Valdes’ birthplace.
Earlier, at the headquarters of the Ministry of the Revolutionary Armed Forces, Army General Raul Castro paid the first tribute to the man who participated in the assault on the Moncada Barracks, served as second-in-command of the “Ciro Redondo” Column No. 8 during the Rebel Army’s invasion of the west (in 1958), and founded the Ministry of the Interior.
At that location, residents of Havana—representing the Cuban people—paid homage to the distinguished revolutionary, and similar ceremonies were held in various Cuban provinces.
Valdes was also a founder of the Party’s Central Committee and its Political Bureau, a deputy to the National Assembly of People’s Power, a vice president of the Council of State and the Council of Ministers, and a deputy prime minister.
