Bafana Bafana claimed a historic Round of 32 berth after defeating South Korea 1-0 in the final Group A match.


South Africa secured a historic place in the FIFA World Cup 2026 Round of 32 on Wednesday with a 1-0 victory over South Korea in the final Group A fixture at Monterrey Stadium.

The match drew a large crowd, with South Korean supporters outnumbering South African fans in the stands.

Before kickoff, FIFA highlighted the significance of the encounter, stating: “South Africa and the Republic of Korea meet for the first time in the FIFA World Cup in this Group A match in Monterrey. Bafana Bafana return to the global stage for the first time since hosting the tournament in 2010, while the Republic of Korea make their eleventh World Cup appearance.”

FIFA also outlined the qualification scenarios ahead of the match: “The South Korean team need at least a draw to secure a place in the next round, while South Africa must win and await the outcome of the match between Mexico and Czechia, as well as results in the remaining groups if they finish third.”

South Korea entered the decisive fixture requiring only a draw to advance to the knockout stage. South Africa, meanwhile, faced a more difficult task after underwhelming performances in their opening two matches.

The African side held on to its 1-0 lead to finish second in Group A with four points, securing qualification for the Round of 32. South Korea finished third with three points and was eliminated from the tournament.
