The diplomatic communiqué released by the Bolivarian Government explicitly outlines the path forward for the two neighboring States, emphasizing the historical necessity of working together despite ideological differences.
“Venezuela reiterates its will to continue strengthening relations of cooperation, mutual respect and understanding with Colombia, for the benefit of both sister nations”, the official statement affirmed, signaling a pragmatic approach to regional diplomacy.
Text reads: “Communiqué: The Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela has known the results of the presidential elections held in the Republic of Colombia, which took place in an atmosphere of normality, participation and peace, and in which Abelardo de la Espriella was victorious.”
Furthermore, the document issued by Caracas underscored that previous periods of political tension and absolute diplomatic rupture only served to harm the citizens of both territories. According to the Venezuelan statement, historical experience demonstrates that geopolitical confrontation, non-communication, and external interference do not yield positive outcomes for the working-class families who live along the extensive shared border of 2,219 kilometers.
“The periods marked by lack of communication, confrontation, and attempts by some groups to fracture the bonds between our nations caused significant damage to the peoples of Venezuela and Colombia“, the official communiqué noted. Consequently, the Venezuelan State reaffirmed its profound conviction that peaceful dialogue, economic cooperation and absolute respect for national sovereignty constitute the only viable paths to consolidate a stable and highly productive relationship.
Colombian Electoral Context
The recognition of the democratic outcome by Caracas occurred shortly after the candidate representing the progressive coalition Historic Pact, Ivan Cepeda, publicly conceded the election.
Despite acknowledging his defeat, Cepeda denounced what he characterized as a systematically hostile and manipulative political campaign orchestrated by right-wing forces in Colombia, which ultimately propelled the far-right candidate Abelardo de la Espriella to the presidency.
With the definitive triumph of Abelardo de la Espriella, and with the objective to prioritize pragmatic state-to-state relations, Venezuela seeks to safeguard critical border integration projects, security coordination agreements and essential commercial trade that were successfully revived under previous administrations. This diplomatic approach aims to ensure that the vital socio-economic progress achieved for millions of citizens living along the border areas is protected from ideological blockades.
The official statement concludes with a strong message of fraternal solidarity toward the Colombian people, reiterating that the destiny of both nations is permanently linked by history, geography and culture, remaining its committed to fostering Latin American unity and preserving the region as a zone of peace.
