Bosnia and Herzegovina defeated Qatar 3-1 this Wednesday to secure third place in Group B and reinforce their chances of qualifying for the round of 32 of the World Cup 2026.
The national football team of Bosnia and Herzegovina kept its qualification hopes alive on June 24 after achieving a decisive victory.
With this result, the European team finished the first stage of the World Cup 2026 in third place of the zone. The tournament format allows the eight best third-place teams from the twelve groups to advance to the round of 32.

If the Bosnian squad manages to qualify, it would represent a historic milestone for the country. This is only their second participation in a world championship, following their quick elimination during the group stage in Brazil 2014.
The team demonstrated great offensive determination from the beginning of the match. The players knew that only a victory would keep their dreams alive in the international competition.

Historic Young Goalscorer
The opening goal of the match arrived in the 29th minute. The young midfielder Kerim Alajbegovic took a powerful shot from approximately 20 meters away that beat the defense of goalkeeper Mahmud Abunada.
At just 18 years of age, Kerim Alajbegovic became the eighth youngest player to score a goal in the entire history of the tournament.
The European dominance continued to grow shortly after the first score. In the 34th minute, defender Sead Kolasinac sent a precise cross toward the far post to find the team’s captain. Forward Edin Dzeko executed a strong volley back toward the center of the penalty area. The ball deflected off Qatari defender Sultan Al-Brake, resulting in an unfortunate own goal that doubled the Bosnian lead.
Sealing the Victory
The Asian squad did not surrender easily despite the two-goal deficit. Right before the end of the first half, veteran midfielder Hassan Al Haydos scored in the 42nd minute to give hope to his team. This goal reduced the difference and kept Qatar competitive during the initial minutes of the second half. However, the team could not sustain the offensive pressure required to equalize the score.
The final blow came in the 80th minute of the match. Striker Ermin Mahmic found space inside the area and scored the third goal to secure the victory for Bosnia and Herzegovina.
Ermin Mahmic has been an active scorer for his national team during this group stage. He previously scored the only goal for his team during the tough 4-1 defeat against Switzerland in the second matchday.
The referee blew the final whistle, confirming the elimination of Qatar, who leaves the tournament without obtaining a single victory. The Qatari delegation expressed disappointment over their performance in the competition.
Meanwhile, Bosnia and Herzegovina must wait for the conclusion of the other groups to define their future. The technical staff expressed confidence in achieving the historic qualification to the next round of the tournament.
