Colombia secured early qualification to the World Cup Round of 32 on Tuesday with a 1-0 victory over the Democratic Republic of Congo at Guadalajara, as a 76th-minute strike from Daniel Muñoz lifted the South Americans to provisional top spot in Group K with six points.


The result places Colombia atop Group K with a perfect six points, followed by Portugal on four, DR Congo on one, and Uzbekistan yet to open their account.

The final group fixtures on June 27 will see Colombia face Portugal in Miami, while Congo take on Uzbekistan in Atlanta.

Colombia’s head coach Néstor Lorenzo hailed his side’s performance, stating that “the boys played a great match, they gave it their all on the pitch and followed the plan.” The Argentine manager’s sole criticism was that his team failed to extend their advantage, though he acknowledged that matches often unfold that way while also praising the resilience of the Congolese side, known as the Leopards.
