Ante Budimir scored the winning goal this Tuesday at the World Cup in Toronto, securing 3 points for Croatia and sealing the mathematical elimination of the Central American team.
Croatia defeated Panama 1-0 on June 23 at Toronto Stadium in Group L of the World Cup 2026, securing three vital points and eliminating the Central American team.
The European team, led by manager Zlatko Dalić, bounced back from their opening defeat against England. Although they struggled to establish control during the first half of the match, they capitalized on a key opportunity in the second half to secure their first three points in the tournament.
This outcome leaves Panama with zero points after two consecutive losses, officially eliminating them from the competition.

During the initial 45 minutes, the Panamanian team, coached by Thomas Christiansen, dominated the pitch with structured defensive lines and quick transitions. Panamanian forward Jose Fajardo acted as the lone reference in the attack, creating constant pressure on the Croatian defensive line. Panama exploited both wings, generating several clear opportunities that forced spectacular defensive interventions from the European squad.
The most dangerous play for the Panamanian team occurred in the 24th minute when defender Amir Murillo advanced down the right flank. He delivered a precise cross to Jose Luis Rodriguez, whose powerful shot was miraculously deflected by goalkeeper Dominik Livaković onto the crossbar. Despite their offensive superiority, the Central Americans failed to open the scoreboard before the halftime whistle.

Budimir Secures Victory
Croatia reacted immediately at the start of the second half. In the 46th minute, right-back Josip Stanišić initiated a combination with Mario Pašalić, who returned the ball with a backheel pass. Stanišić sent a dangerous cross into the penalty box that bypassed Panamanian goalkeeper Orlando Mosquera. Striker Ante Budimir, who had just entered the pitch, tapped the ball into the net to score the decisive 1-0 at the 54th minute.
The goal destabilized the Panamanian team, allowing Croatia to generate more offensive actions. Following a lost possession by midfielder Cristian Martinez, veteran midfielder Luka Modrić assisted Pašalić with a long pass. Although Pašalić failed to convert the opportunity in a one-on-one situation against Mosquera, the European team maintained the tactical upper hand during this segment of the match.

Panama Faces Elimination
Panama attempted to recover and created another dangerous opportunity in the 67th minute. Amir Murillo executed a low shot toward the near post, which was deflected once again by Livaković. In the immediate rebound, the Panamanian side sent a powerful cross into the center of the box, leading to a strong header by defender Carlos Harvey that forced the Croatian goalkeeper to make a spectacular backward leap to save the ball.
With this victory, Croatia recovers from their previous defeat and positions themselves with three points in Group L. Conversely, Panama remains at the bottom of the group with zero points, following their previous 0-1 defeat against Ghana.
Due to the tournament tiebreaker criteria, the Central American nation cannot surpass their competitors, sealing their mathematical elimination from the World Cup 2026 before the final matchday of the group stage.
Next June 27, Croatia will face Ghana, after the African team drew with England this afternoon.
