The tension surrounding Algeria’s participation in the 2026 World Cup has spilled over from the pitch into the media. On Tuesday, the Algerian government suspended digital channel Dzair News broadcasts for three days due to the spreanding of content containing serious accusations against members of the national football team, according to the National Independent Authority for Audiovisual Control (ANIRA).

This state body, responsible for monitoring and sanctioning audiovisual media, demanded that the channel remove the material from all its digital platforms and social media networks. The regulatory measure came after the World Cup match between Algeria and Argentina, which Argentina won 3-0.
In an official statement, ANIRA indicated that it had already warned about the bias of some channels before and during the match.
The regulator stated that, despite warnings about insults and betrayal, a flagrant violation of these principles was detected on the part of Dzair News. The authority did not specify the details of the statements or which team members they were directed at, but indicated that these are serious accusations that constitute a crime and are contrary to journalistic ethics.

ANIRA urged the media to strictly comply with the law and warned that it will take the relevant legal and regulatory measures in the event of similar violations. This sanction falls within the regulatory framework of the Information Law, which came into force in August 2023.
This legislation has been criticized by journalists and human rights organizations, who believe it imposes restrictions and censorship on the media. For its implementation, Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune appointed the ANIRA authorities and the High Council for Ethics and Conduct.
The state of freedom of expression in the North African country is generating international concern. Currently, Algeria ranks 145th out of 180 countries evaluated in Reporters Without Borders’ (RSF) World Press Freedom Index.
This organization, which monitors safeguards for the practice of journalism and documents attacks in the region, had already publicly rejected the content of the Information Law in 2023. The regulatory body concluded that it will continue to monitor media coverage to ensure respect for the laws and regulations in force in the country.
