Mexico City. The intervention of organized crime organizations in the country’s mining sector is under investigation, President Claudia Sheinbaum stated. When asked about her opinion on Canadian mining companies allegedly making deals with organized crime to exploit workers, the head of the Executive Branch noted that they do not have evidence of this, because the complaint has been made through media outlets and has not been presented before any state prosecutor’s office or the Federal Attorney General’s Office.

During the morning press conference, the federal leader pointed out that those who have proof of such ties should approach the judicial authorities and file formal complaints about threats or crimes.

The Mexican Network of People Affected by Mining (REMA) has condemned the acts of “armed” violence that the companies Torex Gold Resources Inc. and Panamerican Silver, both Canadian, have carried out to continue with the dispossession of communities where they have installed their projects, both in the municipality of Cocula in the state of Guerrero, and in Chalchihuites in Zacatecas.

Nevertheless, Mexico’s president affirmed that she does not have certainty that this is happening in order to threaten workers.

“Canadian mining companies must comply with the environmental criteria and mitigation measures that they sometimes comply with in Canada and do not comply with in Mexico, because they have not finished complying with the mitigation of environmental impacts,” she commented, without elaborating on the link with organized crime that has been denounced.

Regarding the security alerts issued by Canadian politicians, President Sheinbaum avoided directly responding to those statements and asserted that in Mexico much progress has been made on security, with a 46 percent reduction in intentional homicides in 20 months, especially in states such as Quintana Roo.

She gave as an example what is being lived at the World Cup, affirming that “it is a joy, a warm reception from the people to the tourists, and Mexico shows what we Mexican families are, and that is above anything else. We are very proud of Mexicans and of the work we are doing for the benefit of the people,” she cut in.
