“Israeli settlements in Palestine violate international law. They contribute to the displacement of people, extreme violence and make a peaceful solution impossible,” Norwegian Foreign Minister Espen Barth Eide said.
Speaking to the newspaper Dagbladet, Eide said the Norwegian proposal goes “further” than those put forward by other countries and described it as “an important message” from Oslo.
The proposed legislation would ban imports of products from those settlements and exports to them, as well as the purchase of real estate there, while exempting “legitimate Palestinian activities and humanitarian aid.”

“The settlements undermine the foundation of the Palestinian state. Norwegian citizens and businesses will not contribute to maintaining that situation,” Eide said.
The bill will be open for public consultation until Sept. 19 before proceeding through the parliamentary process.
Although the Labour government does not hold a majority in Parliament, its center-left allies have expressed support for the proposal, giving it enough backing to pass. Norway recognized the State of Palestine two years ago alongside Ireland and Spain.
