Colombia opened their 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign with a commanding 3-1 victory over Uzbekistan at Mexico City’s Estadio Azteca on Wednesday, securing three points and first place in Group K.


Daniel Muñoz, Luis Díaz, and Jáminton Campaz found the net for Néstor Lorenzo’s side, while Abbosbek Fayzullaev scored the lone goal for Uzbekistan.

The result places Colombia at the top of the group with three points, two ahead of Portugal and Congo, and three above Uzbekistan. In the second matchday on June 23, Colombia will face Congo in Guadalajara, while Uzbekistan will challenge Portugal in Houston.

President Petro congratulated the team on social media platform X, writing: “I congratulate the football team for their triumph in Mexico against Uzbekistan. Go Colombia.” The Estadio Azteca was filled with Colombian supporters who created a home‑field atmosphere for the team.
