Grassroots activists from Wales will travel across the UK to lead a peace vigil at the main gate of RAF Lakenheath on Saturday 27 June 2026.
Organised in collaboration with the Lakenheath Alliance for Peace and supported by networks like Mid Wales Against Arms, the demonstration aims to challenge the return of US nuclear weapons to UK soil and oppose the base’s involvement in ongoing global conflicts.
The event, which runs from 11.00am – 4.00pm, marks a dedicated “Wales Day” at the Suffolk airbase. Protesters will gather at Main Gate 1 to stage a peaceful demonstration. It’ll feature songs for peace, a silent vigil, and speeches calling for regional and international demilitarisation.
The demonstration features prominent voices from the peace movement, including keynote speaker Leigh Evans. The event has also received high-profile messages of solidarity from Dr Rowan Williams (former Archbishop of Canterbury and long-time peace advocate) and legendary non-violent direct action campaigner Angie Zelter.
Public scrutiny of RAF Lakenheath has intensified following a series of high-profile blockades and arrests at the site. Activists are calling attention to the UK’s legal and moral liability for allowing US military operations to launch from sovereign UK territory.
Heather Huntley, spokesperson for Mid Wales Against Arms, said:
We are travelling from Wales to Lakenheath to send a clear message: we do not consent to our country being used as a launching pad for devastating global warfare or the hosting of weapons of mass destruction.
True safety comes from diplomacy and community investment, not from escalating nuclear threats. Welsh peace activists have a proud history of resistance, from Greenham Common to today, and we are standing up again.
The vigil is open to all members of the public who support peace and disarmament. Attendees are encouraged to bring banners, and participate in the peaceful demonstration.
