Intervening in the debate on the Middle East held in the plenary session of the European Parliament in Strasbourg following the announcement of the preliminary U.S.-Iran agreement, the Communist Party of Greece (KKE) European Parliamentary Group delivered a statement condemning the EU’s role in the region.
KKE MEP Lefteris Nikolaou-Alavanos stressed the following:
"Behind the hypocritical title of ‘peace in the Middle East,’ the European Union is attempting to conceal the continuing escalation of war, despite fragile and temporary compromises, as well as the barbarities committed by its allies. These include Israel’s ongoing genocide against the Palestinian people, the atrocities carried out against the people of Lebanon, who continue to be bombed relentlessly, with more than 3,800 dead, and the dirty U.S.-Israeli war against Iran, along with its consequences for the working and popular strata, such as the further surge in the cost of living.
The EU is complicit. In the name of the war economy and military preparations, and guided by the interests of powerful business groups, it is strengthening its economic, political and military relations with the Israeli state. It adopts the unacceptable pretexts put forward by the United States and Israel to justify the war against Iran. Through its positions and statements, it is also giving a green light to a U.S. attack against Cuba.
Imperialist war, just like the so-called ‘peace’ imposed with a gun to the peoples’ heads, are two sides of the same coin. The only way forward lies in the struggle of the peoples against every imperialist alliance, such as the EU and NATO, which are proving day after day that they are far from invincible."
