Mexico City. The incidence of intentional homicides in Mexico recorded a 46 percent reduction between September 2024 and May 2026, going from a daily average of 86.9 murders to 47.3, the federal government reported this Tuesday upon presenting the security balance corresponding to the first 20 months of the administration of President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo.
“There is a 46 percent reduction in intentional homicides. That means that in May there were 39 fewer daily homicides than in September 2024,” the president stated at her morning press conference at the National Palace. She added that these results are the product of the security strategy applied by her government. “Thanks to the strategy and to honesty, there are results,” she maintained.
The head of the Executive Secretariat of the National Public Security System, Marcela Figueroa Franco, noted that May 2026 was the month with the lowest daily average of homicides of the period analyzed and also “the lowest May in the last 12 years.” She also indicated that the average from January to May of this year was 50.4 daily homicides, the lowest level for that period since 2016.
The official detailed that eight states account for 54 percent of the intentional homicides recorded in the country during the first five months of 2026: Guanajuato, Baja California, Chihuahua, Sinaloa, Morelos, State of Mexico, Guerrero, and Veracruz. Guanajuato leads the list with 8.8 percent of the national total.
Figueroa highlighted that 28 states recorded reductions in their daily average of homicides compared to the same period in 2025. Among the most pronounced decreases are San Luis Potosí, with 81 percent; Zacatecas, with 63 percent; and Quintana Roo, with 60.8 percent.
She also reported that high-impact crimes maintained a downward trend. In May 2026, 437.7 daily crimes of this type were recorded, compared to the 636.6 of October 2024, a 31 percent reduction. Likewise, the preliminary national average for 2026 stood at 457.1 daily crimes, 57 percent less than in 2018.
The Secretary of the Interior, Rosa Icela Rodríguez Velázquez, highlighted the progress of the strategy of addressing the causes of violence and affirmed that the federal government has expanded educational and social opportunities for the young population. She reported that, by presidential instruction, 200,000 new spaces will be opened to attend high school, and noted that more than 385,000 young people have shown interest in programs such as Jóvenes Construyendo el Futuro and Jóvenes Unen al Barrio. “We do not wait for young people to come to government offices; today the government goes to where they are,” she said.
For his part, the Secretary of Security and Citizen Protection, Omar García Harfuch, reported the arrest of Homero “N,” identified as the leader of the criminal group Comando Tlahuica and a generator of violence in Morelos. He also reported the capture of three people with Interpol red notices in Quintana Roo and Campeche, among them Denis “N,” an alleged member of a transnational criminal organization linked to drug and human trafficking.
The official further highlighted the arrest of members of the Sinaloa cartel in Chiapas and the seizure of more than 71 tons of cocaine by the Secretariat of the Navy in high-seas operations during the present administration. In Mexico City, he added, David “N” was captured, identified as an operator of the criminal group known as La Choquiza.
García Harfuch stated that between October 1, 2024, and May 31, 2026, more than 56,000 people have been detained for high-impact crimes, nearly 30,000 firearms have been seized, and close to 420 tons of drugs have been secured. “This decrease reflects that the strategy led by President Claudia Sheinbaum is delivering results,” he affirmed.
