A massive political rally organized by the Communist Party of Greece (KKE) in the western Athens district of Peristeri sent a clear internationalist message on Monday evening: “Hands off Cuba! Cuba is not alone.”

The event, organized by the KKE’s Attica Party Organization under the slogan “100 Years Since the Birth of Fidel Castro – We Strengthen Solidarity with Cuba for a World Without Wars and Exploitation, for Socialism”, gathered large numbers of workers, youth and supporters who filled the square in front of Peristeri City Hall.

Red flags and Cuban flags flooded the square as participants demanded an immediate end to the decades-long U.S. blockade against Cuba, the removal of the island from Washington’s fraudulent list of so-called “state sponsors of terrorism,” and a clear position from the Greek government against the ongoing economic strangulation of the Cuban people.

Addressing the rally, KKE General Secretary Dimitris Koutsoumbas paid tribute to Fidel Castro on the occasion of the centenary of his birth, describing the historic leader of the Cuban Revolution as one of the great communist revolutionaries of the twentieth century and a symbol of resistance against exploitation, imperialism and capitalist barbarity.

Koutsoumbas stressed that the Cuban Revolution proved in practice that imperialism is not invincible and that determined peoples can overthrow oppression and exploitation. He highlighted the tremendous social achievements of socialist Cuba in healthcare, education, science, culture and internationalist solidarity, despite decades of aggression, sabotage and economic warfare imposed by the United States.

The KKE General Secretary warned of a dangerous escalation of U.S. hostility toward Cuba, condemning Washington’s intensified blockade measures, sanctions and threats against the island. He denounced the recent U.S. moves targeting the historic leader of the Cuban Revolution, Raúl Castro, as part of a broader campaign aimed at justifying further aggression against Cuba.

Referring to reports of growing military pressure in the Caribbean and hostile statements by U.S. officials, Koutsoumbas underlined that the Greek communists reject any attempt to threaten or intervene against the sovereign Cuban people. “Hands off Cuba!” he declared, calling on workers, trade unions, youth organizations and anti-imperialist movements to strengthen their solidarity with the island of the Revolution.

The rally also featured greetings from Cuba’s Ambassador to Greece, Aramis Fuente Hernández, while actress Dora Chrysikou opened the event with a recitation dedicated to Fidel Castro.

Concluding his speech, Koutsoumbas reaffirmed the KKE’s unwavering support for Cuba and its people, demanding the lifting of all U.S. blockade measures, the removal of Cuba from the list of “state sponsors of terrorism,” an end to the persecution of Raúl Castro and the withdrawal of all threats against the island.

“The Cuban people are not alone,” he stressed. “The peoples will prevail. Venceremos!”
