“I am for a new Albania where the moment you get sick, you don’t have to open a GoFundMe or go into debt.” Thousands of protesters took to the streets of Tirana for the twelfth straight day on Thursday, rallying outside the Albanian Prime Minister’s office in opposition to Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner’s $5 billion luxury resort development project. What began as an environmental protection campaign in response to the Trumps’ plan to build near Albania’s Vjosa-Narta protected area and on Sazan Island in the Mediterranean, has grown into a broader movement against corruption in Prime Minister Edi Rama’s government and for housing affordability and public services.
