“Without democracy, there is no peace, no progress, no jobs, no dignity.” Peru’s progressive presidential candidate, Roberto Sánchez, of Together for Peru (JP) held a closing campaign rally in Lima, Peru on Thursday, June 4. Twenty-seven million Peruvians will head to the polls this Sunday, June 7, to decide who will be the country’s next president. Sánchez will face off against far-right Keiko Fujimori, daughter of former dictator Alberto Fujimori, accused of perpetuating a series of massacres as well as the forced sterilization of thousands of Indigenous and peasant women. Keiko has also been embroiled in several corruption scandals.
