Israel’s continuing attack on Lebanon has shaken the fragile peace talks between the US and Iran. The settler colonial state has also forced thousands to flee the southern suburbs of Beirut as it pushes into the capital.
Drop Site News shared this week how:
Hezbollah has framed its operations as retaliation for Israel’s own daily strikes on civilian areas across southern Lebanon, which have killed hundreds of civilians and demolished entire towns and neighborhoods since Israel escalated war on March 2.
At the start of the latest Israeli invasion in March, the Canary reported:
Israel violated the US-brokered Lebanon 2024 ‘ceasefire’ more than 15,400 times since it was signed. Yet a short salvo from Hezbollah in March this year was framed as a signal outrage by legacy media. That attack has been cited by the settler-colonial state as a pretext to invade.
And:
Not satisfied with pulling the US and its allies into a runaway war with Iran, Israeli troops have pushed into Lebanon with airstrikes pummeling the capital Beirut.
We reported the early moments of the new war. You can also read about the secretive Israel-US ‘side letter’ pact, which gave Israel carte blanche to keep bombing through the ceasefire, and our coverage of Israel’s regular breaches of the ceasefire.
UN calls an emergency meeting
France 24 said that the UN Security Council would hold an emergency meeting on Monday 1 June on Israel expanding its operations in Lebanon. The European Union also called on Israel to “stop its military escalation”.
It added:
Tehran has said a Lebanon ceasefire remained a key condition for any deal with Washington.
CBC said that Iranian media reported:
Iran is halting indirect negotiations with the U.S. after Israel ordered troops to push deeper into Lebanon to battle Tehran-backed Hezbollah…
Tasnim [media outlet] said the Islamic Republic’s negotiating team was stopping exchanging messages with Washington through mediators over attacks on Lebanon, where the U.S.-Israeli war against Iran has reignited Israel’s conflict with Hezbollah.
Israel seizes ‘strategic’ castle in bid for ‘photo op’
Genocidal defence minister, Israel Katz, crowed about Israel’s seizure of a ‘strategic’ Crusader castle in southern Lebanon.
He said:
Twenty-six years after the withdrawal, our heroic soldiers have captured Beaufort once again, and will remain there as part of the security zone in Lebanon.
Drop Site shared footage of a Hezbollah drone attack in the vicinity of the ruin.

According to the Cradle, Israel’s operation in the area was a propaganda effort to calm northern Israeli settlers.
Hezbollah reportedly said:
Given the significant negative impact that the video footage broadcast by Hezbollah of its operations against the Israeli enemy army forces has had on the consciousness of the settlers within the occupation entity, the enemy army has desperately sought to obtain an image it could promote as a crushing victory, in the hope of calming the terror of the northern settlers.

It is not clear what the UN security council will do. Like many international institutions it has proven toothless in regards to Gaza, Lebanon and elsewhere.
Israel’s refreshed assault on Lebanon may well be driven by an intent to derail peace talks. The Canary has reported that Israelis fear they have lost sway on Washington.
US president Donald Trump is desperate for a way out of the failed war with Iran. Israel, however, can’t let go of its colonial ambitions.
