The Communist Party of Greece (KKE) participated in the 2nd Congress of Fronte Comunista (Communist Front), held in Italy on 22–23 May, which took place in a militant and optimistic atmosphere centered on the struggle to build a revolutionary party, strengthen class struggle and advance the cause of socialism.

Delegates from across Italy reviewed the party’s experience in political and organizational work, discussing efforts to strengthen communist organization in a country where the communist movement continues to face the heavy consequences of opportunism and Eurocommunism.

Particular attention was given to the ideological and political confrontation with the Meloni government and social democracy, the activity of communists in workplaces and trade unions, and the growing role of the Communist Youth Front (FGC), especially in universities and among the younger generation.

The Congress also examined major international developments, including the US–China rivalry, the imperialist wars in Ukraine and the Middle East, and Italy’s involvement in NATO and EU imperialist plans. Delegates stressed the need for struggle against Italy’s participation in these designs and highlighted the mass mobilizations that took place against the slaughter of the Palestinian people and the complicity of the Italian state.

The political theses adopted by the Congress described a world increasingly engulfed in war, militarization and humanitarian catastrophe. Fronte Comunista denounced both the Russian invasion of Ukraine and Italy’s participation in the war through support for the Kyiv government, reiterating its position that the conflict is an imperialist war between rival capitalist camps. It also strongly condemned Israel’s crimes in Gaza and Italy’s complicity in the genocide of the Palestinian people, expressing support for an independent Palestinian state within the pre-June 1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital, as well as for the right of the Palestinian people to resist occupation.

Addressing the Congress on behalf of the KKE, Giorgos Marinos, member of the Political Bureau of the Central Committee, emphasized the long-standing fraternal relations between the two parties and their common commitment to proletarian internationalism, class struggle and the fight for socialism and communism. He highlighted the importance of joint activity within the European Communist Action and the International Communist Review, stressing the need to strengthen efforts for the creation of a Marxist-Leninist pole and the revolutionary regroupment of the international communist movement.

Marinos described the foundation and development of Fronte Comunista and the FGC as an important achievement in a country where the communist movement has suffered the dramatic consequences of opportunist degeneration and Eurocommunism. He praised the progress made in building party organizations, intervening in the workers’ movement and strengthening communist youth activity, noting that these achievements provide valuable experience for overcoming weaknesses and expanding communist influence among workers and the popular strata.

A mass political event was held in central Rome following the conclusion of the Congress under the slogan, “We Raise Our Own Flag – Communists Are the Real Alternative.” Speaking at the event, Marinos pointed to the worsening conditions faced by workers and youth under capitalism and the anti-people policies of the Meloni government, which, he said, serves the interests of the monopolies, the European Union and NATO. He stressed that no bourgeois government can offer a solution in favor of the people, as wages and pensions are squeezed, living costs rise and healthcare, welfare and education are increasingly commodified and degraded.

Referring to the growing danger of a wider imperialist conflict, Marinos underlined that the answer lies in the pioneering action of communists, in strengthening intervention in workplaces and working-class neighborhoods, and in deepening ideological and political work aimed at exposing the exploitative nature of capitalism and advancing the struggle for socialism. Concluding his remarks, he reaffirmed the common struggle of the KKE and Fronte Comunista within the framework of the European Communist Action, declaring: “We will stand by your side; together we will move forward.”

The Congress concluded with the election of a new Central Committee, which re-elected Giammarco Chilelli as General Secretary. The Rome event ended with raised fists and the singing of The Internationale, reaffirming the determination of Italian communists to continue the struggle against capitalism and imperialist war.
