Following the significant mobilizations on Monday, where miners, farmers, and residents of El Alto marched down from the outskirts of El Alto down to La Paz, an important meeting of grassroots committees took place on Tuesday in District 8.

The committee gathered at Puente Vela — part of the combative District 8, and home to Senkata, which has a long tradition of resistance — and has become a reference point for all self-organized sectors across the country in the midst of the ongoing mobilizations. In recent weeks, many who have been mobilizing against the Far-Right government of Rodrigo Paz have begun to grow disillusioned with the conciliatory leaderships of organizations such as the local Federation of Neighborhood Councils (a network of grassroots community organizations) that have failed to call for actions and mobilize its bases.

At Tuesday’s self-organized blockade committee meeting, participants resolved to continue the fight for the resignation of Rodrigo Paz, to strengthen unity among the sectors in struggle, and to establish blockade committees in every zone. They also voted to demand that the Bolivian Workers’ Center (COB) call a general strike to escalate the fight.

Several speakers echoed these resolutions, including those who had traveled from other regions and brought their greetings and demands. We reproduce some of their interventions below.

Our struggle is also to defend our new generations, because today’s youth and future generations are the present. As women, we must watch over their future. And if we must die defending our homeland, we must do it, sisters, because our children cannot inherit the impoverished country they want to leave us.

We cannot allow them to sell our natural resources, to one day privatize education because we have no money; to privatize healthcare because we have no money. Today they tell us, “It’s a lie that healthcare and education will be privatized.” But look at Chile: what is it like? Do they have public healthcare? Do they have public education? They do not.

Education there is private. Those with money get educated, and those without do not. We have come out of illiteracy. Today, the future of each of us and of Bolivia depends on education, so that we can be free. And that is what they want to take from us, because they want to subjugate us. They want to subjugate us to the oligarchy. This government sells out the homeland; all it does is govern for the rich, not for the poor.

The poor, those who live day to day, those who work — what have they said to us? They’ve called us traitors and layabouts. We are none of that. Thanks to us, they have their daily bread. Today both the Senate and this traitorous government have betrayed us, and that is why we women must unite, sisters and brothers.

For that same reason, I ask that tomorrow we are all present at this march of protest, to tell the entire world that women will also be in this struggle until the end. If we have to die, we will die. But for our children, for our future generations, and for the homeland.

And we also say to our brothers and sons in the barracks: if this government forces you to come out and kill us, your own people, turn back. Come home, join the people, and fight alongside us to liberate our homeland from these traitors. Help me say: Long live Bolivia!

That idiot should resign. He should resign. Long live Bartolina Sisa! Long live Tupa Katari! Thank you.

A Representative from Chuquisaca

I bring revolutionary greetings from Chuquisaca. Here we are, having marched all the way to Caracollo, and today we remain in the fight. We will not back down, and we are not afraid of the fascist, dictatorial government that is now trying to massacre us.

I am proud to be in this combative land of El Alto, alongside the Bolivian Workers’ Central, the Federation of Mining Unions, the Tupac Katari movement, and all the social organizations that are joining us here today. Almost 23 years have passed since 2003, and we have perhaps lost part of our tradition of struggle.

Perhaps that is why the crisis of political leadership is causing all social sectors to fight on their own. But with each passing day — each day they shoot at us, each day they use tear gas against us — the people are beginning to unite, and that unity must be our victory to remove Rodrigo Paz from the people’s house.

Brothers, we are many. What do we want? His resignation. When, damn it? Now. Death to the traitorous leaders!

A Speaker from Colquiri

I want to thank all the brothers and sisters from the mining district of Colquiri, who have been blockading the Caracollo district for the past three weeks. I want to thank all the brothers and sisters from the communities of Colani, Chicasica, La Guachaca, and Patacamaya, who have given way so we could come and amplify is this significant movement. Thank you very much.

I also ask, brothers and sisters, of unity. Only through unity will we achieve our goals. Only through unity will we overthrow this cursed government.
