Zohran Mamdani is taking the fight to negligent landlords. The NYC mayor announced a sweeping set of policies on Tuesday aimed at alleviating the city’s housing crisis. It involves building 200,000 affordable and rent-stabilised homes over the next decade, while preserving another 200,000. A key part of the plan is taking on corporate landlords and other bad actors who exploit tenants. “When necessary, we will take aggressive legal action to remove negligent owners and property managers,” Mamdani said. “And for buildings that have suffered chronic neglect, we will work to transfer ownership to responsible stewards. Stewards that include community land trusts, nonprofits… or even the tenants themselves.”
