CAGAYAN DE ORO — Media groups decried the killing of radio broadcaster Nestor Micator in Sitio Proper 1, Barangay Fort Pikit, Malidegao town, under the Special Geographic Area of the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM) on May 21.

The National Union of Journalists of the Philippines (NUJP) called for justice, stressing that his killing reflects the persisting impunity in the country. “The Marcos Jr. administration has failed substantially to protect journalists and media workers.”

Micator, a radio broadcaster of D’Empire Radio, was reportedly shot by an unidentified assailant while about to board his motorcycle near the Fort Pikit Barangay Hall past 6 p.m. His wife Ruby was with him during the incident.

In an interview with local news outlet North Cotabato Today, Ruby said that they were appalled because her husband did not receive any threat. “He would usually tell me if he had a conflict with anyone.”

The First District Cotabato Press Corps urged police authorities to hold the perpetrators accountable, as this is an attack on press freedom. “Such acts of violence must not go unpunished and should be addressed in accordance with the law.”

The NUJP reported that Micator, who also served as a member of the barangay’s Lupong Tagapamayapa, is the 11th media worker killed under the Ferdinand Marcos Jr. administration, although two of the cases of media killings have been initially declared as not work-related.

“The fact remains that none of these murders have been fully resolved,” the group said. “Micator should not add to the list of these unresolved cases.” (DAA)
