Bolivia’s uprising has ground the country to a total standstill. For over a week, a historic general strike led by trade unions, miners, and peasant movements has blockaded every major artery in the country, demanding the immediate resignation of President Rodrigo Paz. What began as a protest against the privatization of natural resources and skyrocketing inflation has transformed into a “generalized political uprising.” Bolivian journalist Ollie Vargas joins Rania Khalek and Zoe Alexandra to break down the reality on the ground. “Either they sell out our country to the United States, or we stop that from happening. There’s no middle ground here,” Vargas says. “That’s why the demand of this general strike is the resignation of the government.” Vargas also discusses the newly leaked documents revealing a joint Bolivian police-U.S. operation to arrest Evo Morales, U.S. fears this uprising could become a blueprint for overthrowing puppet governments across Latin America, and finally the current state of Latin America’s left — and why he rejects defeatism. #breakthroughnews
