Virginia Passes Paid Medical Leave

On Monday, Virginia Governor Abigail Spanberger signed a law granting paid medical and family leave to all Virginians. Any residents with a medical crisis, caring for a family member, or having a child will now receive up to 12 weeks paid leave. Additionally, any residents fleeing domestic violence will receive at least four weeks paid leave.

“Not only is this law a huge win for workers, but it will allow small- and mid-sized businesses to better thrive in our Commonwealth by offering competitive benefits they previously could not afford,” said Spanberger on signing the bill.

AFL-CIO Backs Campaign to Keep ICE Out of World Cup

Last week, Payday reported on how SoFi stadium workers were threatening to strike if ICE shows up at their facility during the World Cup. Now, the AFL-CIO is backing a nationwide campaign to keep ICE out of the World Cup.

“Given the racial profiling, warrantless arrests and other unconstitutional tactics the Trump administration is using to detain and deport people with no regard for due process, our affiliate unions are deeply concerned about ICE being engaged for any purpose during the World Cup,” wrote AFL-CIO President Liz Shuler in a letter to FIFA. “The tactics of discrimination, violence and intimidation used by immigration agencies to target working people across the country cause fear and chaos in our communities, and directly affect workers, business operations and local economies.”
