FIFA announced on Wednesday that it has extended the ban imposed on Benfica player Gianluca Prestianni to the international level, jeopardizing his participation with the Argentine national team in the upcoming World Cup in the United States. This move underscores the growing severity of football governing bodies’ stance against abusive behavior.

UEFA had initially suspended the player for six matches, three of which were suspended, following a verbal abuse incident during his team’s Champions League match against Real Madrid. The incident, which involved Brestiani covering his mouth with his shirt, sparked widespread controversy.

FIFA acted swiftly, with its Disciplinary Committee approving UEFA’s request to extend the ban to all competitions, including the World Cup. In an official statement, FIFA confirmed that the ban “now has global effect.”

According to these developments, Prestini will miss Argentina’s first two potential matches if called up by coach Lionel Scaloni, who has yet to finalize his squad.

Argentina is scheduled to open its World Cup campaign against Algeria on June 17 in Kansas City, before facing Austria five days later, in a group that also includes Jordan.

The crisis stems from a UEFA investigation into allegations of racist abuse, supported by Vinicius Junior and Real Madrid’s Kylian Mbappé, who claimed the player used a racist slur in Spanish. However, the investigation did not definitively prove the incident, while Prestini admitted to using a homophobic slur, which resulted in his suspension.

The player had already begun serving his suspension, having missed the second leg against Real Madrid last February. If he is excluded from the national team, he will serve the remainder of his ban in European competitions next season, leaving his international future hanging in the balance between a technical decision and a potential transnational sanction.
