Campaigners from Fossil Free London sat outside the London HQ of Shell wrapped in a fuel pump on 6 May. Others dressed as oil executives poured a red liquid resembling blood over the campaigners, also covering their own hands in ‘blood’. Behind them, a banner read, “BLOOD MONEY: No new oil & gas.”
The protest comes as Shell is set to announce its quarterly profits on Thursday 7 May, which are anticipated to jump amid Trump and Netanyahu’s attack on Iran.
This follows a general trend for the oil and gas sector, with BP reporting last week that its quarterly profits had more than doubled.
This is while the UK expects more price rises driven by the conflict, and over 2,000 people have been killed by the US and Israel’s war on Iran.
Robin Wells, spokesperson for Fossil Free London, said:
In these past few years, as our world becomes more unstable and the realities of climate breakdown set in, it’s never been clearer: Big Oil profits from, and locks in, mass death.
And we’re feeling this so rawly right now. As we see thousands slaughtered in Iran and weep alongside those mothers who will never hold their children again, Shell is making a killing. But this doesn’t mean the system is broken. In fact, it means it’s working perfectly.
Because as long as we rely on massive fossil fuel corporations for our energy supply, we’re tied to the massive price shocks of global crises – that leaves our bills soaring and their profits soaring.
We need to get off this rollercoaster, of energy insecurity, climate breakdown, and greed. We have the solution, it’s renewables.
