Freedom Flotilla Coalition Condemns the U.S. Attack on the Global Sumud Flotilla

[May 1, 2026] The United States’ recent statement threatening the Global Sumud Flotilla (GSF) is nothing more than a shameful regurgitation of Israeli propaganda, designed to criminalize nonviolent resistance to Israel’s crimes.

The U.S. foreign policy apparatus has once again revealed that it is a mouthpiece for Israeli narratives. After allowing Israel to drag it into an illegal and costly war with Iran based on fabricated intelligence and fear-mongering, the U.S. is now following Israel’s lead in attacking a purely civilian initiative committed to ending the siege, occupation, and ongoing genocide of the Palestinian people. This is part of a longstanding pattern in which the United States sacrifices the rights, safety, and even the lives of its own citizens in service of Israeli policy. Rather than condemning Israel for violating the rights of 15 U.S. citizens—among the approximately 170 civilians abducted and brutalized by Israeli forces on the high seas—the U.S. has chosen to undermine and endanger those seeking to defend human rights and uphold international law.

Flotilla organizers have committed no crime—only the principled act of challenging brutal apartheid through nonviolent direct action. The U.S. accusation of “pro-Hamas activity” is the same baseless smear used to criminalize all Palestinian solidarity and resistance, mirroring Israel’s decades-long playbook of delegitimizing anyone who challenges its criminal policies. This same pretext is currently being used to continue the arbitrary detention of two GSF organizers—Saif Abu Kishek and Thiago Avila—who are being held under harsh conditions, have already been subjected to severe physical abuse, and face a serious risk of further ill-treatment, including torture. Rather than justify Israeli piracy, kidnapping, and global terrorism, the United States should demand Israel release Abu Kishek and Avila without delay.

The U.S. claim that the flotilla “circumvents mechanisms designed to ensure humanitarian assistance is received by civilians” is laughable. Such mechanisms have included the deadly U.S./Israeli Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF), which weaponized humanitarian aid and turned aid distribution sites into killing fields, where approximately 2,600 Palestinians were killed and over 19,000 wounded. States engaged in genocide have no moral or legal right to control what enters Gaza and who receives aid. These so-called “humanitarian” mechanisms are tools of apartheid, designed to maintain Israel’s stranglehold over Palestinians, while pretending to be benevolent.

The flotillas are not and have never been about delivering humanitarian aid. Palestinians are capable of thriving on their own. It is Israel that has manufactured the need for aid by isolating Gaza from the world and destroying the foundation of Palestinian life. The Freedom Flotilla is about confronting the root cause of the crisis: Israel’s unlawful blockade and broader system of colonization and domination that has created, and continues to sustain, a humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza. The flotilla movement is committed to ending Israel’s illegal occupation and supporting the Palestinian people’s fundamental right to freedom.

When will the United States stop enabling Israel’s crimes against humanity and instead align itself with the Palestinian people’s right to live free?
