On Wednesday 29 April, Essa Suleiman allegedly stabbed three men — two Jewish and one Muslim, in Golders Green. At the time of the attack, Suleiman was living in supported housing, having previously been detained in a secure hospital. Suleiman has a history of mental illness, and was referred to Prevent in the past.

The initial response was to label the incident an ‘antisemitic terror attack’, with the government raising the threat level in response. In light of the above information coming out, however, these moves would later seem to be premature. Much of the public would not become aware of this fact, however, as the media initially continued to report that Suleiman had only attacked two Jewish men – not that he had also attacked a Muslim man (each of these attacks are alleged at the point of publication).

One of the outlets caught doing this was HuffPost. Despite this, the editor of HuffPost UK would accuse the Green Party deputy of engaging in conspiracy theories:

Owen Jones highlighted that HuffPost was among the outlets presenting a false narrative:

There is something which needs clarifying here. At this moment in time, HuffPostand HuffPost UKare owned and operated by different companies. The above is from the Yank-run HuffPost whereas Schofield works for the branch owned by Independent Digital News and Media. The two outlets have opted to share the same branding, though, so fuck him. Also, Huff Postwas far from the only outlet to do this.

As Cameron Baillie reported for the Canary:

judging by headlines from Sky News, the BBC, Associated Press, NPR, DW, and others, you’d probably think that the two Jewish men in Golders Green were Suleiman’s sole attack victims. Why the journalistic avoidance?

It wasn’t just the media either:

Stooges of the establishment

Let’s all remember that famous quote from 1984:

The Party told you to reject the evidence of your eyes and ears. It was their final, most essential command.

There is obviously a big difference between ‘1984 the book’ and ‘2026 the reality.’ However, there is a noted difference in that the media outlets responsible for such dreadful and misleading reporting aren’t government-run – they just fall in line with the establishment position when it suits their wealthy owners.

When Jeremy Corbyn was the Labour leader, supposedly left-leaning outlets like the Guardian and the Independent attacked him just as much as the right-wing shit rags. They’re now dipping their toes in the water to see if they can get away with the same thing with the Greens. The early signs are that they can’t, because people are too wise to this stuff now.

If they want to sacrifice what remains of their audience, though, let them.
