Senegalese goalkeeper Edouard Mendy continued to make history after leading Saudi side Al-Ahli to their second consecutive AFC Champions League title, following a 1-0 victory over Machida Zelvia in the final, underlining his decisive presence in the biggest matches.
This achievement reflects Mendy’s continued brilliance, as he has become a pivotal figure in Al-Ahli’s system, thanks to his vast experience and ability to make a difference in crucial moments.
Mendy reigns supreme across three continents
Mendy has established himself as an exceptional goalkeeper, becoming the only player to have won continental titles on three different continents: Africa, Europe and Asia.
At international level, he was one of the key pillars of Senegal’s victory in the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations, following their win over Egypt, and also featured in the most recent continental final against Morocco.
In Europe, he shone in a Chelsea shirt, leading the side to the 2021 UEFA Champions League title at the expense of Manchester City, a feat that cemented his status amongst the world’s elite goalkeepers.
In Asia, he continued to shine with Al Ahly, winning the AFC Champions League twice in a row, first by defeating Kawasaki Frontale and then overcoming Machida in the most recent final.
Big-game keeper
Mendy has cemented his reputation as a final specialist, delivering standout performances in decisive matches and keeping a clean sheet in seven major finals across his various clubs, a testament to his mental fortitude and ability to handle pressure.
These successes included his continental titles with Al Ahly, as well as his prominent role in Chelsea’s European triumph and his influential performances for the Senegal national team at the Africa Cup of Nations.
This record highlights that Mendy is not merely a goalkeeper, but a decisive factor in winning trophies, thanks to his consistent form and his ability to step up in the moments that make the difference.
