The path to peace or the deception of the people?

Comment by the International Relations Section of the CC of the KKE on the attempt to whitewash Spanish social democracy in order to mislead the people:

Once again, both internationally and in our country, social democratic forces —such as PASOK, SYRIZA, the New Left, as well as other opportunist forces in Greece— are rushing, with no small degree of exaggeration, to celebrate, publishing headlines such as “Do it like Sánchez” and claiming that Spain “is choosing the path of peace”.

What are they really trying to conceal from the people? Can they truly hide the fact that Spain is a member of NATO and continues to develop strategic cooperation with the US to this day? Can they erase the reality that the Spanish bourgeoisie, through all its governments —whether led by the People’s Party or by the Spanish Socialist Workers’ Party (PSOE), currently in office, has consistently and strategically supported this orientation? Can they deny the historical fact that the PSOE, whether in government or in opposition, supported the Gulf War in 1991, the intervention in Yugoslavia in 1999, the intervention in Afghanistan in 2001, the intervention in Libya in 2011, and so on?

The attempt to whitewash the Sánchez government comes at a time when it is retreating, taking into account the pressure of popular outcry against the imperialist attack on Iran. At the same time, in essence, the choices of the PSOE are dictated by the interests of Spanish monopolies, which at this stage are not served by the escalation of the imperialist war in the Middle East.

This position stems from their heavy dependence on energy imports, as they are directly affected by instability in the Gulf; from the fact that Spanish companies viewed Iran as an emerging market for technology exports; and from the reality that the bourgeoisie is not in a privileged position to take part in the division of the spoils in the region. At the same time, following the same logic, the Spanish government supports the Spanish energy monopoly Repsol, which responded to Trump’s call for investment in Venezuela following the imperialist intervention on 3 January.

If we were to follow their logic of those who urge us to praise the social-democrat Sánchez, wewould today also have to celebrate the stance of the far-right Italian Prime Minister Meloni, or the British Prime Minister Starmer, who are distancing themselves from US–Israeli plans in the Middle East, defending the interests of their own bourgeois classes —even as they support, like Sánchez, the EU’s “strategic autonomy” and the war in Ukraine, and prepare their own plans for the day after in the Strait of Hormuz.

We might also recall various examples of such divergence, such as the stance of PASOK governments in the 1980s towards Middle Eastern states, or Greece’s withdrawal from NATO’s military wing under the Karamanlis government in 1974–1980, which had nothing to do with any genuine “pro-peace” policy or the interests of the people, but rather with the needs of Greek capital.

In this context, it is worth highlighting certain points that demonstrate that Sánchez is not a “peacemaker”:

1. The US anti-missile destroyers USS Roosevelt and USS Bulkeley, stationed at the naval base in Rota (Cádiz), Spain, participated in operations against Iran by reinforcing Israel’s anti-missile shield.

2. Their primary mission was to reinforce Israel’s missile defence. According to sources in the Spanish Ministry of Defence, they actively participated in intercepting missile attacks launched by Iran in retaliation for the strikes of 28 February, acting as a “supplement” to Israel’s Iron Dome and Arrow systems.

3. The destroyers are stationed there under a bilateral US–Spain defence agreement, the latest extension of which was signed by Sánchez and his government in 2023. This renewal allowed for an increase in the number of US destroyers in Rota from four to six —an expansion that enabled the USS Roosevelt and USS Bulkeley to be stationed there and to participate in the current operations of 2026.

4. As part of the imperialist missions abroad in which the Spanish government is involved, more than 1,000 Spanish military personnel are deployed in the Middle East: nearly 700 in Lebanon, 275 in Iraq, and 150 in Turkey.

5. The Sánchez government in Spain is among the strongest supporters of Ukraine in the imperialist war against Russia; it has provided billions in military equipment (including tanks) to the Zelenskyy regime, and is training Ukrainian soldiers and officers at NATO bases in Spain. It is striking to recall the photograph of Sánchez alongside Zelenskyy in front of the Guernica by the communist painter Pablo Picasso.

6. The Spanish government, which presents itself as a “dove of peace”, is developing multi-billion-euro arms programmes with the Turkish government, which continues to occupy 37% of Cyprus, including the construction of a Turkish aircraft carrier and the purchase of fighter jets and helicopters. Meanwhile, in a recent interview, NATO hawk Mark Rutte praised Spain for the air defence coverage provided through the deployment of a Patriot system by its Social Democratic government is support of “key US interests in Turkey” .

7. The PSOE government, at the very same time it verbally condemned the genocide of the Palestinian people by the murderous state of Israel, signed 46 contracts for military equipment with Israeli companies.

For all these reasons, the people must reject the calls of social democracy and opportunism to support one bourgeois government or another, and to align themselves with interests that are not their own. With the communists taking the lead, the struggle must be strengthened for the independent interests of the working class and the peoples against the involvement of every country in the imperialist war, against the causes that give rise to war, and for the overthrow of the decayed capitalist system.

¿El camino de la paz o el del engaño al pueblo?

Comentario de la Sección de Relaciones Internacionales del Comité Central del KKE con motivo del intento de blanquear a la socialdemocracia española para engañar al pueblo

Una vez más, tanto a nivel internacional como en nuestro país, las fuerzas socialdemócratas —como el PASOK, SYRIZA, Nueva Izquierda en Grecia- así como las fuerzas oportunistas, se apresuran a celebrar con bastante exageración y publicando titulares como “Hazlo como Sánchez”, que España “elige el camino de la paz” etc.

¿Qué es lo que intentan ocultar a los pueblos? ¿Acaso se puede ocultar el hecho de que España es miembro de la OTAN y mantiene hasta hoy una cooperación estratégica con EE.UU.? ¿Pueden hacer desaparecer la realidad, que demuestra que la burguesía española, con todos sus gobiernos, ya sean del Partido Popular o del Partido Socialista Obrero Español, que hoy gobierna, apoya global y estratégicamente esta orientación? ¿Pueden quitarnos la experiencia histórica de que el PSOE, desde su posición en el gobierno o en la oposición, apoyó la Guerra del Golfo en 1991, la intervención en Yugoslavia en 1999, la intervención en Afganistán en 2001, la intervención en Libia en 2011, etc.?

El intento de embellecer la imagen del gobierno de Sánchez se produce en un momento en el que este realiza maniobras teniendo en cuenta también la presión de la indignación popular contra la agresión imperialista a Irán. Al mismo tiempo y en esencia, las decisiones del PSOE están dictadas por los intereses de los monopolios españoles, a los que no les conviene en esta fase la escalada de la guerra imperialista en Oriente Medio. Esto se debe a la gran dependencia de las importaciones de energía, ya que se ven directamente afectadas por la inestabilidad en el Golfo, por el hecho de que las empresas españolas veían a Irán como un mercado emergente para la exportación de tecnología y porque la burguesía no se encuentra en una posición privilegiada para participar en el reparto del botín en la región. Al mismo tiempo, con el mismo criterio, el gobierno español apoya al monopolio energético español de Repsol, que respondió al llamamiento de Trump para invertir en Venezuela tras la intervención imperialista del 3 de enero.

Aquellos que nos instan a aplaudir al socialdemócrata Sánchez, deberían, siguiendo su lógica, estar hoy celebrando la postura de la primera ministra italiana de extrema derecha, Meloni, o del británico Sturmer, que se distancian de los planes de EE.UU. e Israel en Oriente Medio, para defender los intereses de sus propias clases burguesas, precisamente en un momento en el que apoyan, al igual que Sánchez, la “autonomía estratégica” de la UE, la guerra en Ucrania y preparan sus propios planes para el próximo día en el estrecho de Ormuz.

También podríamos recordar diversos ejemplos de diferenciación de los gobiernos griegos del PASOK en la década de 1980 respecto a los Estados de Oriente Medio o la retirada de Grecia del ala militar de la OTAN por el gobierno de Karamanlis entre 1974-1980, que no tenían nada que ver con una política realmente a favor de la paz ni con los intereses del pueblo, sino con las necesidades del capital griego.

En este contexto, cabe destacar algunos aspectos que demuestran que Sánchez no es un “pacificador”:

1. Los buques antimisiles y antitorpederos USS Roosevelt y USS Bulkeley de EE.UU., que tienen su base en la base naval de Rota (Cádiz) en España, participaron en la operación contra Irán en la que reforzaron el escudo antimisiles de Israel.

2. Su principal misión era reforzar la protección antimisiles de Israel. Según fuentes del Pentágono español, participaron activamente en la neutralización de los ataques con misiles lanzados por Irán en represalia por los ataques del 28 de febrero, actuando  “complementariamente” a los sistemas israelíes Iron Dome y Arrow.

3. Los antitorpederos tienen su base allí, en virtud de un acuerdo bilateral de defensa entre EE.UU. y España, cuya última prórroga fue firmada por el gobierno de Sánchez en 2023. Este acuerdo de defensa renovado permitió aumentar el número de antitorpederos estadounidenses en Rota de 4 a 6. Esta ampliación es la que ha permitido que el USS Roosevelt y el USS Bulkeley se encuentren allí y participen en las operaciones de 2026.

4. En el marco de las misiones imperialistas fuera de las fronteras en las que participa el gobierno de España, hay más de 1.000 militares españoles desplegados en Oriente Medio, casi 700 en el Líbano, 275 en Irak y 150 en Turquía.

5. El gobierno de Sánchez en España es uno de los mayores defensores de Ucrania en la guerra imperialista contra Rusia. Ha destinado miles de millones en equipamiento (vehículos blindados de combate, etc.) al régimen de Zelenski, y entrena a soldados y oficiales ucranianos en las bases de la OTAN en España. Se nos ponen los pelos de punta al recordar la foto de Sánchez junto a Zelenski frente al cuadro Guernica del pintor comunista Pablo Picasso…

6. El gobierno español, que se presenta como la “paloma de la paz”, está desarrollando programas de armamento por valor de miles de millones de euros junto con el gobierno de Turquía, que mantiene bajo su ocupación el 37% de Chipre, incluyendo la construcción del portaaviones turco, la compra de aviones de combate y helicópteros, etc. Recientemente, el halcón de la OTAN, Mark Rutte, en una entrevista, elogió a España por la cobertura antiaérea que proporciona el gobierno socialdemócrata español a través de un sistema Patriot a “intereses estadounidenses fundamentales en Turquía”.

7. El gobierno del PSOE, mientras denunciaba de boquilla el genocidio del pueblo palestino a manos del Estado asesino de Israel, firmaba 46 contratos de equipamiento bélico con empresas israelíes…

Por eso, los pueblos deben rechazar los llamamientos de la socialdemocracia y el oportunismo a apoyar a uno u otro gobierno burgués y a alinearse con intereses ajenos. Deben unir fuerzas con los comunistas para fortalecer la lucha por los intereses propios de la clase obrera y de los pueblos contra la implicación de los países en la guerra imperialista, contra las causas que la generan, por el derrocamiento del podrido sistema capitalista.
