A hundred years on, the general strike of 1926 remains a mythical event – in the face of relatively low levels of class struggles in recent decades, many today look upon it with the rose-tinted glasses of misplaced nostalgia. Arguably the largest industrial dispute in Britain’s history, it lasted only ten days (nine if counting from 4 May) before being called off by the union leadership.
