A new Datafolha poll, released this Saturday, April 11, shows President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva of the Workers’ Party of Brazil, technically tied with Senator Flávio Bolsonaro of the right-wing Liberal Party, in a possible second round of this year’s elections. Bolsonaro appears numerically ahead, with 46% of the vote against 45% for Lula.

The previous survey, conducted in March, showed the current president with a three-point lead over the son of former president Jair Bolsonaro, who is currently imprisoned and ineligible to run for office after being convicted of attempted coup d’état.

This is the first poll since Ronaldo Caiado (Social Christian Party, PSC), another right-wing politician, officially entered the race as a pre-candidate. In a potential second round against Lula, Caiado appears to hold 42% of the voting intention, compared to 45% for the Workers’ Party candidate.

The scenario is the same when the poll projects a contest between the current president and the governor of Minas Gerais, Romeu Zema (New Party, Novo). He receives 45% to 42% for Lula.

Datafolha also conducted first-round simulations, and President Lula leads in all scenarios presented.

In the spontaneous survey, when names are not shown by the researcher, Lula reaches 26%, while Flávio has 16%. Caiado appears with 2%, the same percentage as former President Jair Bolsonaro. Those who still don’t know who they will vote for total 42%.

However, when respondents are presented with the candidates’ names, Lula reaches 39% of voting intentions and Flávio rises to 35%, two percentage points higher than the previous poll. In this case, Caiado reaches 5% and Zema gets 4%. Renan Santos (Mission Party) appears with 2%, Aldo Rebelo (Christian Democracy, DC) and Cabo Daciolo (National Mobilization) reach 1%.

Rejection

Those who say they would not vote for the current president under any circumstances total 48% in the current Datafolha poll, while 46% say they reject Flávio.

Zema and Caiado, who are still being recognized by most of the population, have lower rejection rates. The Minas Gerais native is unknown to 56% of voters and rejected by 17%. Caiado is unknown to 54% of voters and has a rejection rate of 16%.
